SAFETY - RELIABILITY - LONG SERVICE LIFE
Heating systems should be routinely checked to make sure they operate safely and efficiently. Every year, I come across a furnace that has not been checked for years and I've found potential carbon monoxide threats, furnace breakdowns, and furnaces that are working harder than they should to maintain comfort. Examples
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A FURNACE CHECKED?
If you have an older furnace with a standing pilot you should have it checked by a certified technician on an annual basis. This type of furnace requires additional cleaning and inspections. A 90% furnace should also be checked annually because they collect and drain water and can become clogged. A newer standard furnace (80%) should be serviced every 1 to 2 years. Check with the manufacturer for service recommendations to keep your warranty coverage. Ask about our annual maintenance program.
WHERE SHOULD I SET MY HUMIDIFIER?
The humidifier should be utilized during the winter months only. It should be turned off (0% humidity) in the summer and set around 35% humidity in the winter. Some models have a summer/winter damper that should be closed in the summer and open in the winter.
The typical service life of a furnace is 20-25 years and about 15-18 years for an air conditioner. However, a well maintained furnace or air conditioner can have an increased service life because they operate effectively to keep your home comfortable.
1) The simplest way to maintain high efficiency is to change the air filter every 1-3 months and I recommend a basic $5-8 pleated filter. Stay away from the high dollar $15-20 filters because they can reduce air flow, drop efficiency, and often cause limit switches to trip.
2) Adjust your thermostat setting down to 60-65 degrees when you leave home and at night to save energy. Installing a programmable thermostat can save as much as 20% on utilities compared to a non-programmable thermostat.
3) Having a service technician clean and inspect the furnace once a year will keep it operating efficiently and safely. Ask about our annual maintenance program.
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
Every home should have carbon monoxide detectors on the bedroom levels. Check the expiration date printed on the detector, as they should be replaced every 7-10 years.
If your carbon monoxide detector sounds an alarm, call emergency personnel (911) or Colorado Springs Utilities (719-448-4800) to have your home checked. These devices only sound when concentrations are at or above toxic levels. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous to children and the elderly.

Carbon monoxide safety video
FACT: The original humidifier control (called a humidistat), was made from horse hair. As the humidity increased the hair would stretch, just like human hair, and operate a switch.
FACT: In 2013, fedral regulators wanted to increase furnace minimum efficiencies by 10%, but it did not go into effect due to legal battles.
FACT: Standard furnaces use metal vent pipes for the hot exhaust gases. High efficiency furnaces keep more heat in the home only requiring PVC plastic pipes for exhaust gases.
FACT: Standing pilot furnaces were phased out in the mid 1980's. If you have one, it has lasted longer than its designed service life.
If the furnace is over 20 years old.
If the furnace has a major repair such as a
motor, circuit board, or gas valve.
If the heat exchanger is rusted or cracked.
If the efficiency is low and utility bills are high.
Older furnaces can waste as much as half (50%) of the energy that goes into them, and that costs money.
EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY
Todays furnaces are 80% to 96+% efficient and much safer. The controls won't allow the furnace to run if there is a problem and there is no standing pilot to worry about.
Optional two-stage furnaces allow the furnace to operate at high or low fire to match the heating needs of the home.
VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR
Optional variable speed motors are efficient and quiet. They start slowly and ramp up quietly until they come up to speed. They also provide additional air flow and compensate for air filters as they become clogged.
